Yercaud
Yercaud is India’s one of the least expensive & laid back hill station. But the place is rich in its natural charm. Originally known as “Yericaud” (lake - forest) the Britishers turned it to Yercaud. Spread over 383sqkm, Yercaud is small enough not to tire you and yet spread out to give you a sense of serenity.

How to reach - About 41/2 hr drive from Bangalore or one hour uphill drive from Salem.

Recommended duration of the stay - 2 nights & 3 days

Places to stay:

Major attractions
Big Lake:
This is the main attraction where much of the action takes place. Boating is the major activity here. Near the lake is Anna Park with a well groomed garden. Also check out the small lake, fed by seven wells, situated close to the town.

Lady’s Seat:
It overlooks the winding Ghat road and offers a spectacular view of Salem. Try reaching this point at night, after dinner. For those interested in a closer view, there’s a mounted telescope. Swing it to your extreme right to view the Mettur dam on Cauvery River. Close to the Lady’s seat is a silk farm and Pagoda point, a viewing point, also known as Gents Seat.

Shevaroy Temple and Bear’s cave:
Situated atop Shevaroyan Hill, the Shevaroy temple is the highest point in Yercaud. The temple is dedicated to local diety, Sevaran & his consort Kaveriamma. On the way to temple is Bear’s Cave, believed to have been an escape tunnel of a long gone Raja. Today, the cave is covered by vegetation & rocks.

Killiyur Falls:
This 300ft high waterfall is situated amidst picturesque surroundings. The water comes via a stream, all the way from Big Lake.

Botanical Garden:
It is home to hundreds of plants, including the rarities like Pitcher Plant. You will also find specimens of famous Kurunji flower, which blooms once in 12 yrs. The garden has an Orchidarium, reputed to be India’s 3rd largest. It houses over a hundred species of Orchids, of which about 30 are exclusive.
