| Ooty is also known as "Udhagamandalam". It’s been rightly titled as the as Queen of Hills. Ooty, the headquarters of The Nilgiris district is one of the famous hill stations in South India. It is situated at an altitude of 2,240 meters above mean sea level. The word Nilgiris means Blue Mountains. It is a land of picturesque picnic spots and had been a popular summer and weekend getaway for the British during the colonial days. There are plenty of interesting tourist spots like Botanical Gardens, Lakes, waterfalls, shooting spots, Wildlife Sanctuary, Tea estates and many more. |

| When to Travel? |
| Ooty can be visited throughout the year. Summer (Mar – May) is pleasant, Winter is cool (Oct – Feb) & monsoon (Jun – Sep) is beautiful. |

OOTY LAKE & BOAT HOUSE:
From just behind the central Bus Stand (also near the Railway station) the famous Ooty Lake stretches, in an irregular 'L' shape, for about 2.75 km in length and varying distances in width (100m – 140m). This lake was artificially formed by John Sullivan, the founder of Ooty, in 1823-25 by damming the mountain streams flowing down Ooty valley.
Surrounded by lofty eucalyptus trees and shrubs the lake is a scenic delight to ones from the concrete jungles. During summer seasons, in May, boat races and boat display are organized for two days at the lake which draws huge crowd. In recent years the lake and the boat house have become the hub of entertainment for the visitors. |

BOTANICAL GARDEN:
This garden was laid out in 1847 and is spread over 22 hectares ascending the slopes on the hill at an elevation of 2,400 meters above Sea Level. An explicit collection of flowering trees, beautiful shrubs, and rare colour lilies are seen.
Flourishing green, well maintained lawns, rare trees species a 20 million year old fossil tree, a monkey’s puzzle tree – monkeys can’t climb this tree, an Italian - style garden bordering, an immense variety of flowering bushes, flowers, and plants , fern house with a vast range ferns and orchids, a clear pool are some of the highlights of this garden. . Not surprisingly, it’s a favourite destination for Botanical students.
The Garden is maintained by the Horticulture Department of the Government of Tamil Nadu and has a very wide variety of plants that include different types of roses, imported shrubs, rare flowering plants etc. The east hill of this garden also houses the tribes of Nilgiris, called Todas. Their tradition and culture is a matter of significance if you were interested in human civilization. |

DODDABETTA PEAK:
The Doddabetta Peak stands at an altitude of 2,623 meters. It is the highest point in South India, making it possibly the best vantage point around Ooty. It is merely 10kms from Ooty so you can simply grab your camera and head straight to the peak, and click amazing pictures of the valley below. On a clear day, which is honestly not that often, one can see far off areas, even the plains of Coimbatore and the flat highlands of Mysore.
There is a "Telescope house" that is run by the Tamil Nadu Tourism Development Corporation in the Doddabetta Peak to enable the tourist to get a better view. Trekking to the top peak as it is not very challenging, and at the same time provides views that are worth every step you take through the trees. |

NILIGIRI MOUNTAIN TRAIN:
The ‘Nilgiris hill train’ connects Ooty to Mettupalayam. The train covers the 45 km to Udhagamandalam in four and a half hours. The train averages 10.4 km per hour and is perhaps the slowest in India. Route is very scenic & has about 208 steep curves and 13 tunnels. Bollywood hit song – ChaiyyaChaiyya …. was shot on this moving train. |

Avalanche is a nature lover's paradise, located 26 km away from Ooty. Beautiful lake surrounded by thick forest is the major attraction there. |

| CATHERINE FALLS: |
| This beautiful waterfall falls from an impressive 250 feet. It can clearly been seen from the top of Dolphin's Nose, if seeing the entire waterfall as one total impression is what you are looking for. It is also possible to take a road to the top of the falls. This vantage point allows you to truly appreciate the awesome power that Mother Nature has contained within a waterfall as you look down the 250 feet to the pool of water and its surrounding landscape below. |

| DOLPHIN'S NOSE: |
| Dolphin's Nose is an enormous rock formation that is entirely unique. The protruding rock formation looks exactly like what it is named after, a dolphin's nose. It takes some effort to climb to the top of this rock outcropping, but the views are absolutely worth the hard work. There are gigantic gorges found both to the left and right of Dolphin's Nose. |

| LAMB’S ROCK: |
| Lamb's rock is an excellent picnic spot nea, on the way to Dolphin's Nose. The rock is a sharp cliff that drops down several hundred feet to the lush jungle below. On the right hand is the Hulical ravine. It is possible to see the Coonoor stream some 5000 feet below. This vantage point also provides you with an excellent view of the Coimbatore plains. |

| SIM’S PARK: |
| Sim's Park is an unusual botanical garden that was developed back in 1874. Naturally occurring trees, shrubs and creepers, are in the park as are many unusual species of plants that have been brought in from a variety of places around the world. The park is situated in a deep ravine on the northern side of Coonoor and covers twelve acres of undulating land. The well thought out park has a beautiful lay out. There is an annual fruit and vegetable show that is held in the park that is well attended. |
