Mysore, the capital city of Wodeyars, has always enchanted its admirers with its quaint charm, rich heritage, magnificent palaces, beautiful laid out gardens, imposing buildings, sacred temples etc . There is an old world charm about the city that reaches out & leaves no one untouched.

Mysore Palace: The city’s signature and the home of the Wodeyars, was designed by English architect Henry Irwin. Palace is built on the ashes of the old wooden palace and completed by 1912. Palace is illuminated on Sundays between 1900hrs to 2000hrs. You have to be there to believe how it feels to see it when more than 97000 electric bulbs lit up at a time.
Note: Visitors must take their shoes off to enter the palace. Camera is also not allowed

Jagmohan Palace :
Built in 1861, by Maharaja Krishnaraja Wodeyar is an alternative retreat for the royal family. The palace has housed Sri Jayachamarajendra Art gallery since 1915, which displays fabulous paintings of Mysore & Tanjore type sculptures & musical instruments. The collections include works of Raja Ravi Varma & the Russian painter Roerich.

Sri Jayachamarajendra Zoo :
One of the best Zoos in the country, with wide range of animals in captivity.
Zoo timings – 0900 hrs to 1700 hrs. Closed on Tuesdays
Chamundi Hills :
Hill that guards the city, capped by the 11th century temple of goddess Chamundi, who killed the demon Mahishasura – is the symbol of Mysore. After darshan, while driving back, visit 16ft monolith of a Nandi (bull), Lord Shiva’s mount.
Temple timings – 0700 hrs to 1300 hrs, 1530 hrs to 1800 hrs, 1930 hrs to 2100 hrs.
Planet X:
A modern day attraction famed for its Go – karting track. This amusement park includes bowling alley & video game parlour.
St. Philomena’s Cathedral:
A beautiful cathedral, built in the gothic style. It is an imposing building with stained glass windows.
Folklore Museum:
Museum is housed at Mysore university campus, with excellent armoury of Mysore art. After the visit to museum, stroll on the Kukkarahalli lake bund, Mysore’s favourite waking track.
Timings- 1000 hrs to 1700 hrs. Sunday closed.
Shopping
The Devaraja fruit & vegetable market has been held up as a classic of urban planning and shows that open markets can be as clean as mall. The market is a delightful combination of colours and smells.
For genuine Mysore Sandalwood and other arty souvenirs, best bet is the government run Cauvery Arts Emporium. Also pay a visit to Government Silk Weaving Factory on Manantavady road, where you can witness the weaving of Mysore Silk Sarees.
Government Sandal Oil Factory is where sandal oil and Mysore Sandal Soap are made.
Note: You need permission to visit both the factories.

Mysore Dussehra : The most famous festival in Mysore noted for its triumphant celebrations.
Festival is celebrated in the month of September end / October, dedicated to goddess Lakshmi & Chamundeshwari. Main attraction is the famous for Elephant processions.

Major sightseeing places around Mysore
Brindavan Gardens ( 18 kms ) - The Krishnaraja Sagar Reservoir on the river Cauvery is the brainchild of the master engineer Sir M. Vishweshwariah. Below the dam is the famous Brindavan Gardens. It has variety of fountains including musical ones that burst into air in vivid colours.

Somanathpura ( 35 kms )
Small village on the banks of the river Cauvery, known for sculptures carved on the walls of The Keshava temple, built in 1268.

Srirangapatna ( 12 kms )
It is set within and around the ruins of Tipu Sultan’s fort on the banks of river Cauvery.
Major sightseeing places are as below:
Sri Rangaswami temple: presiding deity of the holy isle of Srirangapatna.
Capt. Bailey’s Dungeon: Situated on a elevated platform, near the fort wall are the dungeons where the Tipu’s prisoners of war were jailed.
Dariya Daulat Baug: Wooden palace built by Tipu in 1784, set amidst of manicured lawns and flower beds.
