SHILLONG :

This beautiful capital of Meghalaya is about 100 kms from Guwahati. It is also known as Scottland of the East was the capital of British created Assam till 1972. It still retains the colonial charm.
It has nestled few spectacular sightseeing places like – Elephant Falls, which is also known as 3 step falls, Ward’s Lake, surrounded lovely gardens, Don Bosco Museum of Indigenous culture, Lady Hyderi Park etc.

CHIRRAPUNJEE :

It is a sub divisional town in the East Khasi Hills district in the Indian state of Meghalaya.
It is located about 2 hrs drive from Shillong. It is credited as being the wettest place on Earth. However, nearby Mawsynram currently holds that record. Though, it still holds the world record for the most rainfall in a calendar month and in a year.
You can do a day trip from Shillong or stay one night. The main attractions of the place are –

Living Root Bridge

Meghalaya's double-decker and single-decker root bridges are unique in the world and are a sight to behold. The bridges are tangles of massive thick roots, which have been intermingled to form a bridge that can hold several people at a time. Khasi people have been trained to grow these bridges across the raised banks of streams to form a solid bridge, made from roots.

Mawsmai Caves

Mawsmai caves, a few miles further away from Cherrapunjee is fast emerging as a new tourist destination. The caves, made of limestone, spellbind the visitor the moment he enters the caverns.

Nohkalikai Falls

Nohkalikai Falls is the tallest plunge waterfall in India. Its height is 1115 feet (340 metres). The waterfall is located near Cherrapunji, one of the wettest places on Earth. Nohkalikai Falls are fed by the rainwater collected on the summit of comparatively small plateau and decrease in power during the dry season in December - February. Below the falls there has formed a plunge pool with unusual green colored water

MAWLYNNONG (CLEANEST VILLAGE OF ASIA)

Mawlynnong/Mawlynnong Village located in the East Khasi Hills of Meghalaya, also referred as ‘God’s own garden’ has won the acclaim of being the cleanest village in Asia in 2003. The village known for its cleanliness is located around 90 kms from Shillong and is a community based eco-tourism initiative. The community has made collective effort to maintain the ambience of a clean village. The village offers picturesque natural beauty, a trek to the living root bridge at a neighbouring village Riwai. The village also offers a sight of natural balancing rock, a strange natural phenomenon of a boulder balancing on another rock. The adage "Neighbours envy, owners pride' is apt for Mawlynnong as it has earned the distinction of being one of the cleanest villages in Asia, a fact that every Mawlynnong villager is proud of and other villagers are envy of.
The village is quite pretty, especially in the monsoons when there is lush greenery all around, with waterfalls paving the way to small streams and abundance of flowering orchids dangling from the trees and hedges add to the beauty of the village.
The village also offers breath taking view of Bangladesh plains as it is located on the Indo-Bangla border.

DWAKI

The small border town of Dawki in the West Jaintia Hills has the famous river Umngotand its crystal clear water, which is a major tourist destination in Meghalaya. Dawki lies between India and Bangladesh and is the trade hub between the two countries. This small city is also famous for its famous Umngot river and a beautiful bridge.
People flock to the city to enjoy a boat ride in the Umngot river, and view of the nearby sights. During the spring season the tourist activities can be widely seen. A boat riding competition is hosted. The cold water, beautiful suspension brides and the surrounding greenery make it a worth visit.



KAZIRANGA NATIONAL PARK



All those who have thought Indian one-horned rhinoceros only existed in Jurassic-era, then a trip to Kaziranga is a must for them. One of the most sought after wildlife holiday destinations in India, Kaziranga National park's 430 square kilometer area sprinkled with elephant-grass meadows, swampy lagoons, and dense forests is home to more than 2200 Indian one-horned rhinoceros, approximately 2/3rd of their total world population.

Along with the iconic Greater one-horned rhinoceros, the park is the breeding ground of elephants, wild water buffalo, and swamp deer. Over the time, the tiger population has also increased in Kaziranga, and that's the reason why Kaziranga was declared as Tiger Reserve in 2006.
Kaziranga Park remain closed from 01 May till 31 Oct every year for the visitors. Therefore November to April is the best time to visit Kaziranga National Park.

TAWANG

Tawang is the most picturesque town at an elevation of 10,000 ft, very cold throughout the year. It is close to the Indo-China border. Winter witnesses heavy rainfall in this area. It a Buddhist hub with a huge monastery and known for its natural beauty and is the house for tribal native community called Monpa. To reach Tawang you will go through Selapass.



Closest airport is at Tezpur with limited flights. Otherwise people fly from Guwahati airport, which needs 2 nightstop over in between.
Major attractions of Tawang are – Tawang Monastery, PTSo lake, and Sangetsar (Madhuri) Lake,Nuranang water falls, Bum La Pass.

TREKKING


1. DAVID SCOTT TRAIL:

An old trekking route and one of the most popular trekking routes in Meghalaya, David Scott Trail Shillong has been named after David Scott, a British office. The officer discovered this route in the first half of 1800s in the form of a mule track for travelling from Assam to Bangladesh. Earlier this route spread in over 100 km and used to take around 5 days to get covered, on-foot.
Noon: Packed lunch is advisable during trek.
The present trail route is separated into smaller trekking routes and the trail between Mawphlang and Lad Mawphlang, is the most famous one. This route covers the lovely terrain of Eastern Khasi Hills and now the route in David Scott Trail expands up to 16 km and can be covered in 4 ½ hrs. The whole trek is blessed with mesmerizing natural wonders such as cascading waterfalls, crystal clear streams gushing down from mountains, typical Khasi villages, scenic valleys, forests groves and expansive meadows. Later drive to Shillong.



2. DOUBLE DECKER LIVING ROUTE TREK

Like the saying goes 'A Journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step,' our long trek to the Double Decker Living Root Bridge in Nongriat village commences from Tyrna village. The Double Decker Living Root Bridge which is 250 years old is in a remote village 'Nongriat' and is accessible only by trek. There is no doubt that it is a challenging trek involving a steep climb of over 3000 steps. However, let this not keep you away from this place. Despite being a little challenging trek, it is very much doable.
The natural pools formed here are breathtaking The pathway to the root bridge is almost 99% cemented and the whole trek could be divided into 3 legs. First leg is pretty easy and less time consuming with long and neatly spaced out steps. Second leg is the most challenging as the steps are really small and the descent is almost vertical. One needs to be careful during this second leg as a single mistake could make you tumble down. The path is spectacular with ponds, forest, many living bridges and small village houses.

3. TAWANG CHU

Foreign tourists, particularly adventure seekers are regular visitors who come here to explore the numerous trekking routes located in the mountains. For trekkers, the Bomdila-Tawang area offers enormous scope. The area around Tawang Chu is both interesting and challenging for trekkers. Starting from Jong, one can trek to Mago passing through a breathtaking jungle where one can see some superb waterfalls. The best months for trekking are May and October. Some more fascinating trekking routes are: Bomdila-Seppa, Along-Mechuka, Daporijo-Taksing, Pasighat-Tuting, Pasighat-Mariang, Daporijo-Along and Bomdila-Daimara-via-Ramlingam and Chakku.
Moreover, one of the trekking routes is very popular because Mahseer angling opportunities. Starting from the plains of Siang, this route passes through a thick forest. This route also offers great views for those who like to capture Arunachal’s wild and pristine beauty in their cameras.
For boating, tourists usually head for the Salley Lake where boating facilities are provided to visitors.

ITINERARY

11 Nights& 12 Days


DAY 01 - GUWAHATI – SHILLONG 110 KMS | 04:00HOURS

  • Arrive Guwahati airport and drive to Shillong.
  • Check-in Hotel and after refreshment time permits we visit Cathedral of Marry and Ward’s Lake.
  • Evening roamarounf the famous Shillong Police Bazar on foot.
  • Overnight in Shillong.

DAY 02 - SHILLONG - CHERRAPUNJEE - SHILLONG

  • After breakfast you will be traveling to Cherrapunjee – the wettest place on the earth.
  • En route visit the famous Elephant Falls and Shillong Peak - to enjoy a bird’s eye view of Shillong city.
  • At Cherrapunjee visit – Mawsmai Cave, Mawsmai Falls, Seven Sisters Falls and Nohkalikai Falls.
  • After lunch at Cherrapunjee, visit Thankarang Park, Koh Ramhah and Khrem Falls.
  • Drive back to Shillong for overnight halt.

Day 03 - CHERRAPUNJEE – MAWLLYNONG – DWAKI - SHILLONG

After breakfast, drive to Mawllynong, the cleanest city of India. On arrival, we will visit the living root bridge is a 53 ft long bridge. Locally known as 'JingkiengDeingjri' which means 'bridge of the rubber tree,' this bridge is remarkable that it is more than a 100 years old. Then drive to Dawki, a beautiful village known for its crystal clear river waters. You can do boating here. (India – Bangladesh Border). Late afternoon drive back to Shilong. On arrival check into Hotel. Overnight at Shillong.

DAY 04 - SHILLONG - KAZIRANGA 253 KMS | 06:00HOURS

After breakfast, check out and drive to Kaziranga national park located in Assam state. It is known for the one horn Rhinos . Day at leisure. Overnight stay in a resort.

DAY 05- KAZIRANGA

Full day at leisure and safaris on Elephant and jeep. Morning & evening Safari . Overnight stay.

DAY 06 - KAZIRANGA - BOMBDILA 210 KMS | 07:00HOURS

Today visit Bomdila Monastery and view point, later explore the local market. Overnight stay

DAY 07 - BOMBDILA - TAWANG 170 KMS | 07:00HOURS

Today after breakfast drive to Tawang.Enroute you will visit Sella Pass and Sella Lake situated at an altitude of 13476 ft.Also visit Jaswant Ghar and before reaching Tawang visit the Nunarang fall.Reach Tawang and check into Hotel.Evening at leisure.Overnight at Tawang.

DAY 08 - TAWANG

After early breakfast, visit TawangMonestry - The Famous Gaden Namgyal Lhatse, popularly known as Tawang Monastery was founded by Merak Lama Lodre Gyatso in the year 1680-81. The monastery stands on the spur of a hill, about 10,000 feet above sea level and has ravines in the south and west, narrow ridge on the north and gradual slope on the east. It offers a commanding and picturesque view of the Tawang-chu valley. From a distance it appears like a fort as if guarding the votaries in the wide valley below. Tawang monastery is the largest of its kind in the country and is one of the larges t monasteries in Asia. Though it has the capacity for housing about seven hundred monks, the actual number of resident lamas (monks) at present is a little more than 450. This monastery is the fountain-head of the spiritual life of the people of this region.
Later visit Urgelling Monastery - the birth place of Sixth Dalia Lama. Ani Gompa ,PTSo lake, and Sangetsar Lake, after a late lunch and refreshment visit Tawang War Memorial and evening at leisure. Overnight at Tawang.

Day 09 - BUM LA PASS, SANGETSAR LAKE

Optional tour to Madhuri lake and Bumla pass. Bum La Pass is one of the highest passes in North East Himalayan at an altitude of 16500 ft above sea level at Indo – China border. A special permit is required to visit the place(extra cost). Takes a 2 ½ hrs drive from Tawang. Enroute you can visit picturesque Madhuri lake (Also known as Sangetsar lake), which was formed during 1971 earthquake. The lake is unique with the tree trunks in it.Overnight stay in Tawang

DAY 10 - TAWANG – DIRANG      130 KMS | 05:00 HOURS

After breakfast drive back to Tawang via Sella Pass. Enroute visit Nuranang water falls of Bollywood movie Koyla, near Jung village. If you want to go to the bottom of the falls, you have to walk down. Otherwise you can have a view of the huge falls from the parking area itself.Overnight stay at Dirang

DAY 11 - DIRANG- TEZPUR      155 Kms | 05:00Hours

After breakfast drive to Tezpur.Reach Tezpur and visit ChitralekhaUddyan, Agni har, ahabhairava Mandir, Usha Pahar, Da Parbatia gate.Later evening check into hotel.Overnight in Hotel.

Day 12 - TEZPUR AIRPORT DROP      155 Kms | 05:00Hours

After breakfast drive to Guwahati airport. Take an evening flight from Guwahati to your destination


Important Facts for Travellers:

  • Please carry original ID proof (Voter ID card/Pass-port/Driving License/etc.) for security purpose & hotel policy.
  • The tourism infrastructure in Assam, Meghalaya & Arunachal are not very developed and one should not expect or compare it with the standards of plains & other developed destinations there is always scarcity of water and power in the region and so you would come across situation like water (hot) being supplied on time basis – morning & evening.
  • The guest should always keep cool with the drivers as they are not tourism educated and come from different remote villages.
  • As there is shortage of space for car parking in the entire Assam, Meghalaya & Arunachal region – guest will have to wait at the Lobby in time for the vehicle to start their sightseeing / transfers.
  • Room Heater available with an extra cost bourne by the guest directly (Except at Premium & Luxury Packages)
  • Due to shortage of power the guest sometimes, may have to bear it with candle light.
  • Basic personal items to be carried include, feather jacket & heavy woolens during winter and light woolens during summer, walking boots, Umbrella or rain proof jacket during monsoon, torch, spare batteries, water flask, cold cream, personal medicines & Sunglasses.
  • Better to bring heavy woolens if traveling to Arunachal & Meghalaya as this area is cold throughout the year.
