Trek to Source of the Ganges Gangotri – Gaumukh
DURATION: 7 NIGHTS / 8 DAYS WITH 3 DAYS OF TREKKING
FIRST TRIP IS ON 23 APRIL 2011
GangotriThe Ganges, world’s most sacred river flows across the sweltering plains of northern India to the Bay of Bengal. Its source is high in the Himalayas, amongst the snows and glaciers close to the Tibetan border.

You begin your journey to the source of the holy Ganges from Rishiskesh a quaint little town of great religious significance before continuing by road to Gangotri. This trek begins at Gangotri, one of the four 'Dhams' or pilgrimage sites in the Garhwal region of Uttaranchal which is bustling with Sages and Sadhus ((Holy men, re-nunciate) who have journeyed here to pay homage to the source of that holiest of holy rivers: the Ganga. The spiritual intensity of Gangotri, one of India’s most sacred pilgrimage sites, is palpable as you witness the daily puja at the temple, and the Hindu devotees bathing at the water’s edge. We follow a well-used trail through rhododendron forests and alpine pastures to Gaumukh, the 'Cow's Snout'. This is the physical source of the Ganges, where it emerges from the gray-blue ice of the Gangotri glacier. Shrouded in legend and folklore and flanked by an impressive concentration of 6000m peaks, it is here that the holy river Ganges begins its long journey to the sea.

GomukhFrom Gaumukh by traversing the glacier you can reach the high altitude meadows of Tapovan (4463m) and Nandanvan (4500m), which provide pnoramic views of the Chaukhamba, Bhagirathi, Shivling peaks and the confluence of the Chaturangi and Raktavan Glaciers.

This spectacular trek gives you a perfect blend of cultural interest and physical challenge. Dramatic canyons, majestic mountains, cascading waterfalls, pine and birch trees, together with the holy waters of India’s most sacred river make the Source of the Ganges a feast for the soul and senses.
